Ephesians: The Mystery of Christ

2012 Applied Biblical Studies Conference
Franciscan University of Steubenville | July 25-27

The Christian community in Ephesus was like no other Christian community in the ancient world. The Apostle John lived there. The Blessed Mother lived there. And St. Paul himself spent years there, teaching, living and working alongside the people.

Not surprisingly, St. Paul’s Letter to the Ephesians is like no other letter of Paul’s. No other letter has such a highly developed theology of Christ. No other letter has such a highly developed theology of the Church. And no other letter has such a highly developed theology of the sacrament of marriage.

But, arguably, no other letter could. When he wrote to the Ephesians, Paul wasn’t writing to Christian communities founded by others or a local Church torn apart by internal strife. He was writing to his own community, a community that had a deeper understanding of the Gospel and his thought than any other.

At this summer’s Applied Biblical Studies Conference, along with some of the most gifted and faithful Scripture scholars in the country, you’ll explore that thought as laid out in the Letter to the Ephesians, coming to a deeper understanding of Paul’s theology and the nature of the Church across space and time.

As in years past, in partnership with the St. Paul Center for Biblical Theology, the Applied Biblical Studies Conference will offer participants the choice of attending a series of workshops that will qualify them to present Journey Through Scripture, the St. Paul Center’s exciting Bible study series, in their home parishes.

This year, participants can choose from three different tracks: “Genesis to Jesus,” “The Bible and the Mass,” and the newest Journey Through Scripture study, “The Bible and the Church Fathers.” (First-time participants must complete “Genesis to Jesus” first.) All participants will receive the theological content of the study, as well as the practical training and materials necessary to launch and present the study in their parish. Those choosing to attend these workshops will need to arrive in Steubenville one day earlier than other conference participants. An additional fee of $80 will be added to the cost of registration. Space for these tracks is limited, so those interested in attending should register early.
