The same Holy Spirit who inspired the authors of Sacred Scripture to write, inspired the apostles and their successors to preach from generation to generation, handing down the Word of God through what the Church calls Sacred Tradition. Together, both modes of transmission—Scripture and Tradition—reveal God’s truth. Without one, we know less of God. With both, we are made rich in the only treasure that matters.
Yet, even those of us most confident in our knowledge of Scripture can feel less certain about our understanding of Tradition. We wonder, What exactly does Sacred Tradition teach us? Why does Tradition hold such authority? And who distinguishes between traditions and Tradition?
The Ninth Annual Deep in History Conference will provide these answers and more as we explore the theme, “Stand Firm on Tradition: The Role of Sacred Tradition in the Life of the Church.”
Guided by speakers such as Mark Shea, Dr. Scott Hahn, and Marcus Grodi, we’ll dig into the Old Testament roots of Tradition. We’ll discover what the New Testament and Church Fathers teach us about it. We’ll see how the legacy of Tradition unfolded through major historical events such as the Reformation and Vatican II. And we’ll look at the part it plays in our own lives today.
Organized by the Coming Home Network International in partnership with Franciscan University of Steubenville, the conference will include daily opportunities for Mass, adoration, confession, and fellowship. You will also be invited to attend a panel discussion about Sacred Tradition, which will be taped for EWTN’s The Journey Home.
Mark your calendars for October 21-23, 2011, and join us in Columbus for a weekend that will strengthen your knowledge and renew your faith, as we get to the heart of Tradition in the Catholic Church.
