We can only imagine the uproar that resulted when the young Pharisee began “preaching the faith he once tried to destroy” (Gal 1:23). Before long, the Jewish religious leaders opposed to the Christian movement were seeking to kill Paul. The persecutor had become the persecuted.
We invite you to join as we look to understand a man who the Word of God records saying “I advanced in Judaism beyond many of my own age among my people, so extremely zealous was I for the traditions of my fathers” (Gal 1:14, RSV), and in Acts 9:1-2 Breathed murderous threats against the disciples of the Lord. Yet tradition records his martyrdom at the hands of Emperor Nero, beheaded for the Gospel of Christ that he first sought to destroy.“Saint Paul is Apostle of the Gentiles, who dedicated himself to the spreading of the good news to all peoples, spent himself for the unity and harmony of all Christians,”
“May he guide us and protect us in this bimillenary celebration,” “helping us to advance in the humble and sincere search for the full unity of all the members of the mystical body of Christ.”
~ Pope Benedict XVI
