Dr. Scott Hahn will join an ecumenical team of renowned scholars in the first annual conference of the Center’s Letter & Spirit Project. The conference theme will be “Word, Worship, and the Mysteries.”
To be held December 9-10 at St. Paul Seminary, near Pittsburgh, the conference will explore the interrelations of prayer and practice, Scripture and liturgy, sanctity and the sacraments, and the kingdom of God and the Church. "We want to foster conversation and deepen our understanding of how the mystery of God’s plan of salvation is communicated to believers in the liturgical worship of the Church, especially in the Mass," Dr. Hahn said.
The conference will also feature, the inaugural Father Ronald D. Lawler Lecture, to be delivered by Dr. Robert Louis Wilken, a Center fellow and internationally renowned scholar of the ancient Church.
"In establishing this annual lecture we pay tribute to a great American theologian and an early and vital supporter of our work," said Dr. Hahn said. "Dr. Wilken, our inaugural lecturer, embodies what Father Lawler stood for - faithful scholarship that brings out of the Church's biblical and liturgical treasures insights that enable us to better preach, teach and pray the faith."
The late Father Ronald D. Lawler, O.F.M. Cap., was the only American on the Pontifical Roman Theological Academy, an elite corps selected by the Pope to serve as his personal advisors on theological issues.
Dr. Wilken is the author of 10 books and is William R. Kenan, Jr. Professor of the History of Christianity at the University of Virginia. His most recent book is The Spirit of Early Christian Thought: Seeking the Face of God.
