Dr. Steven C. Smith

Dr. Steven Smith is professor, author and popular speaker on Sacred Scripture.  He is presently Assistant Professor of Sacred Scripture at Mount St. Mary’s Seminary in Emmitsburg, Maryland.

Dr. Smith’s brand new book is now available: THE WORD OF THE LORD: 7 Principles for Catholic Scripture Study (Our Sunday Visitor Press, Sept. 2012).  Dr. Scott Hahn wrote the Foreward. The book is endorsed by Francis Cardinal George, among others. “This book is for everyone who’s ever asked, ‘What does a Catholic approach toScripture study look like?’”  (Word of the Lord, p. 13).

Dr. Smith also has a new website: http://www.TheGodWhoSpeaks.com.  There, you’ll be able to order signed copies of his book, as well an an array of CD/MP3 sets of Catholic biblical teaching. Dr. Smith is known for clear, passionate, and meaty presentations of the Catholic faith and Scripture in particular. In the Fall of 2012, Dr. Smith’s first CD project was unveiled: a 5-CD “companion set” to the book, featuring an overview of the 7 Principles of Catholic Scripture study—and over 3 1/2 hour of “questions answered,” having to do with Scripture.

His next CD set is equally exciting: a 20-CD series on “The Biblical Mysteries of the Rosary.”  It will be available Dec. 8, 2012 at http://www.TheGodWhoSpeaks.com.  Interested persons are encouraged to contact Dr. Smith’s team via his website, about the possibility of having him speak at a parish or conference event.

Both in and beyond the classroom, Dr. Smith teaches and presents on an array of biblical and theological topics, including: Jesus and the Four Gospels, Principles of Biblical Interpretation (Hermeneutics), the Old Testament and early Judaism.  Having made a number of trips to the Holy Land, he also speaks about this “Fifth Gospel” in many of his classes and presentations.

Dr. Smith completed his Doctorate in New Testament / Early Christianity in 2008, graduateing Summa Cum Laude from Loyola University of Chicago. His dissertation, which examined the Wisdom Christology of the Gospel of John (and Raymond Brown’s approach to John’s Gospel), was successfully defended that year.  Dr. Smith studies under Dr. Urban von Wahlde, a leading specialist in Johannine source criticism.

Both Steve and his wife grew up Catholic, yet left the Church for a number of years as young adults.  They met in leadership positions at Willow Creek Church, one of the nation’s most influential evangelical “mega-churches,” in South Barrington, Illinois.  While pursuing Masters degrees at Wheaton College Graduate School (dubbed ‘the Evangelical Harvard’) both re-discovered their Catholic faith and soon after, were received back into the Catholic Church (2001).

In addition to his academic work at “The Mount,” Dr. Smith has served as Formation Advisor to a number of seminarians each year.  Both he and Elizabeth are very committed to supporting our future priests—as well as the Sacarment of Marriage, family and the culture of life.  Dr. Smith served the Archdiocese of New York in Manhattan, under Cardinal Egan, and assisted the Family Life Office as they re-shaped their Marriage Preparation programs, working alongside the Sisters of Life (2006-08).  He has since presented pre-Cana programs to thousands of engaged couples seeking the Sacrament of Marriage.

He and Elizabeth have been married eleven years, and God has blessed them with two beautiful daughters, Isabelle Marie and Olivia Marie (and a boy in heaven).

Dr. Smith is available for events, missions, etc.  Please contact him through http://www.TheGodWhoSpeaks.com.
